What is EAN-13 and when do you need it?

EAN-13 is the 13-digit retail barcode used across Europe, Australia, and much of the world outside North America. Each code encodes a GS1 company prefix plus a product reference and check digit — the format scanners expect at checkout and on marketplace listings that require a GTIN.

If you sell in the UK, EU, or globally on Shopify or Amazon, you likely need an EAN-13 barcode generator that handles dozens or hundreds of SKUs at once, not a single-code widget that exports one PNG at a time.

EAN-13 vs UPC-A

UPC-A is 12 digits and dominates US retail; EAN-13 is 13 digits and is the international standard. Many products carry both on the same packaging. QuickCode supports either symbology — pick EAN-13 on the configure step when your spreadsheet column holds 13-digit GTIN values.

Not sure which format your file uses? See our UPC barcode generator page for 12-digit US codes, or download a sample CSV to test both workflows.

Bulk EAN-13 labels from CSV

  1. Export your product list with a column for the 13-digit EAN/GTIN plus optional SKU, name, quantity, and price.
  2. Upload the CSV — Excel (.xlsx/.xls) exports work too when saved as CSV.
  3. Map the barcode column; headers like EAN, GTIN, or barcode are recognized automatically.
  4. Select EAN-13 as the barcode type and choose a label template (Avery 5160, A4 2×7, etc.).
  5. Preview the full sheet, then download a print-ready PDF with no watermark.

Validation and common mistakes

EAN-13 values must be exactly 13 numeric digits with a valid check digit. Leading zeros matter — store GTINs as plain text in Excel to avoid scientific notation (e.g. 0123456789012 becoming 1.23E+12).

QuickCode flags invalid lengths and check digits before rendering so you fix rows in the mapping step, not after printing a full Avery sheet. For import tips and error examples, visit our examples page and FAQ.
